Indianapolis Museum of Art; July 30; part of the Tara Donovan exhibition. Austin-based percussionist and composer Nick Hennies set up his wares in the middle of the now-closed exhibition by Tara Donovan and played two pieces over the course of about 45 minutes. The first, "Objects," was, as the musician later told us, "partially inspired" by Donovan's work, and it was a breeze to see why. Just like Donovan's stacking of everyday objects to create dimensional landscapes, Hennies uses his instruments to create rhythmic stacking, beating on the woodblocks, snare, marimba and triangle with a persistent tempo that results in waves of sonic resonance. The second piece, "Psalms," broken into five sub-pieces, continued the theme, proving that Donovan and Hennies are two peas in an artistic pod, their respective artforms painstaking, while their art gathers itself up into something beguiling, even transcendent. By what turned out to be the fifth "Psalm," I had long lost count, eyes closed, stacking my own art in my head.

"SubArachnoid Space are the best and longest running instrumental cinematic post-rock/prog band you have never heard of. Besides having a history that dates back to 1995 and a staggering number of fantastic albums and even more line-up changes, the band's lynchpin Melynda Jackson has the distinction of being one of my all time favorite people. She was kind enough to share this extremely limited, self-released CDR called Crusades with the dear readers of Cosmic Hearse. If you were one of the many people that got all bonered up by the record by Gift Horse I posted some time back, you'd do wise to get this and all things SubArachnoid. The band now resides in Portland, Oregon but this was recorded back in 2006 when they still called San Francisco home. I think after fifteen years it's time this band got their due."

"I have no idea where I found this or when it was released, but any,...I mean ANY Subarachnoid Space release is a good one.<--(note the period). The tale of this band is a powerhouse of Pink Floyd,..meeting a street walking king crimson in outer space.This band is in my opinion the best acid soaked improv, jamming band to ever touch their own genre. It does require a very unique kind of drummer, But when those born into the drummer's throne are naturally inclined to explore beyond the drum cage, they bring with them an exhilaratingly fresh, hyper-rhythmic approach to music composition and improvisation. A new generation of exciting drummer solo projects is emerging right here on the FMA: Black Pus (Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt), Soft Circle (Hisham Baroocha ex. Lightning Bolt/Black Dice), GDFX (drummer for Teeth Mountain, Liturgy, and the Dan Deacon Ensemble) and Bolmongani (Ryan from Paik) come to mind. "The American trio Zonder (Dutch for 'without') presents a version of heavy rock that needs a few spins to grab you. The music is dense with all kinds of influences, performed with a raw energy.

The unpolished and direct recording of the music may be seem not 'perfect' (by rock standards), it does resemble the energy of a liveperformance pretty aptly. At first you may feel the sound is somewhat lacking, I've found that after two songs you get used to it and forget about your initial impression. In the mix of influences you can find aspects of many bands: Faith No More, VoïVod, (early) Killing Joke, Kyuss, King Crimson but also a few odd inserts like the koto in 10k, next you'll find yourself in some Native American ritual (with heavy guitars). Goblin-like horror in Mt and several times they veer into heavy psychedelics. The songstructures are not always evident, sometimes being very untraditional (to rock standards that is, the structure might just as well be lifted from a different tradition), but always full with mood- and meterchanges and curious harmonics.

Like I said, this does need a few spins to sink in, but I doubt this will scare away readers of this zine. The spins will result in slowly unwinding the coils a bit and you'll find your way in. If anything, the fire in the performance should be the thing that catches on first, the structures will follow.

zonder sounds like a breed of extraterrestrial primitive tribal musicians landed their spaceship on earth and wrote their version of all the music they hear in a heavy-fucking-rocking manner. these aliens seem to particularly like heavy distorted guitar sounds, throbbing bass, industrial tribal drumming, complex rhythms and fuzzed out counterpoint. this is music for people who don't want their music neatly packaged and processed into some faggoty ass look-at-my-hairdo radio play version of a big mac meal. i always thought aliens didn't have any facial hair, but zonder shows us that the exception proves the rule.

With Zonder u get the best of many worlds. You have fast punk, jazz key changes, metal vocals, funk bass and its as 3-dimensional as Richard devine or Venetian snares, or any electronic music. Although this appears to be a vast range of musical influences, Zonder does the hard part of blending genres to the point where everything flows from the ground up. It seems just when you think you figured them out they bring in something new. If you are interested in the passing of the torch from Killing Joke and frank zappa to our new gods ZONDER.

Minor Reviews :

Blake strikes me as pure talent and ambition. His music is raw and pure. I could listen to this every day and never quite get everything this album has to say. It is beautiful and eliquent. Coming from the hippie swamplands of Portland Oregon, this album is as important as any Decemberists album. "C'mon Echaton" is not an album you want to pass up if you love singer songwriter music that is genuine.
